Overused Narrative Essay Topics To Avoid

The narrative essay gives you a chance to make a personal comment. It allows you to refer to the senses and reveal how you feel about the topic. You should always try to use active sentences and not passive sentences. Make your writing come alive. Take the reader on a journey with you. And always avoid overuse of the personal pronoun. I this and I that can become tedious and boring.

But once you know the right way to go about writing a narrative essay, it is most important that you choose an appropriate topic. It needs to be a topic which engages you and inspires you so that the work you produce will have that sort of effect on the reader. Unfortunately there are some narrative essay topics which have, not to put too fine a point on it, been done to death.

Put yourself in the shoes of the teacher or tutor who has to read your essay. They have to read hundreds, make that thousands of essays. Coming up against students who choose the same topic over and over again makes it hard for the reader to get inspired. They know every argument , every analysis there is on certain topics. Look for something which is unusual, something out of left field. By choosing a different but an inspiring topic, your analysis essay has an excellent chance of doing very well.

Narrative essay topics to avoid

  • going overseas to a different country made me a better person
  • working in the community showed how helping others is important
  • how I overcame a tough challenge and became a better person
  • playing sports taught me all about life
  • using big words makes me sound important

When a student writes an essay explaining how travel to a foreign country changed their life, the boredom indicator immediately starts flashing. Yes it may be true that travel broadens the mind, but the world and its mother have made this type of trip. This is nothing new.

When somebody does some voluntary work in the community and then claims that this experience has taught them an important lesson in life, they are only kidding themselves or they have written an essay which has being written a million times before. Find a topic which is unusual and unique.

It might be true that you've overcome a tough challenge but you would need to define tough. Certainly someone who has overcome a life threatening illness would be a candidate for this topic. But unless the challenge was genuinely tough, the essay tends to lose credibility.

Everybody plays sport and everybody benefits from same. This is nothing new.

Choosing a topic requires sincerity and knowledge. If you think by choosing unusual words, big words and hope that by doing so that will impress the person reading your essay, think again.
