Few recent events have shaken the world like the September 11th attacks on the World Trade Centre. So many people died during these attacks that it is hard to come to terms with such evil and senseless hatred. However, out of all bad events we do see some good. Many heroes were exposed during rescue missions after the attacks us as a society came together to condemn the attackers. This essay will delve into some of these points.
- What happened on September 11th?
- Results of the attack
- Two sides of humanity
On September 11th 2001, two commercial planes were hijacked for the purpose of flying them into the world trade centre (or twin towers). It is said that Muslim extremists were responsible for the attacks, but this has been since argued. What we do know is that many people died during the attack, including the hostages that were aboard the two flights.
The world trade centre and building 7 came down during the attacks. Fire fighters and rescue workers tried their best to get everyone to safety, but many lives were lost. But the biggest impact this attack had on the USA was that of an anti-terrorist campaign. Airport security for one was tightened significantly, and today passengers are not even allowed to joke about hijacking a plane, carrying deadly weapons, or terrorism in general. Police units such as the FBI and CIA are also dedicated to preventing future attacks like these.
There is much controversy about who initiated and masterminded the 9/11 attack. Regardless of who it was, we can see two sides of humanity in this tragedy. First, we see the vindictiveness of evil people who hold to their skewed beliefs. That so much evil is in the world is enough to make us think we need to live in fear. Second, we see how eager people are to jump in and help their fellow man when in distress. The assistance and sacrifice displayed by people during and after the attack was enough to give humanity hope once again.
Regardless of who was responsible for these attacks, as with all trouble we must take what we can and learn from these circumstances. Boosting our country’s security may be one way to counter terrorism, but more often than not, the real enemy is already within. Either way, it is comforting to know that in a crisis, there are real life heroes who are willing to lay down their lives to rescue others.
